Sleeping Bear Dunes was designated as a national lakeshore in 1970.

Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, in the northwest corner of the lower penisula of Michigan. This park has beautiful sand dunes that can be hiked with spectacular views of the lake. The name of the park comes from a dune that at one time resembled a sleeping bear, native americans called it the Mother Bear and used it as a landmark.

The park preserves historic light houses, historic villages, many boat wrecks, and an old coast gaurd station. Hiking, boating, sightseeing, birding, camping and so much more can be done at this amazing park.
